cracks in render

Question:

Hi I have fine cracks in my rendered walls.

I have filled them with no more gaps and sponged off access.

This does not seem to have filled the cracks as they are too fine.

Any advice . Thanks. Dave.

Answer:

Dear Dave,

Cracking is often seasonal and varies with the amount of movement that occurs as a consequence of the render or the substrate absorbing or losing moisture.  If the two
absorb /lose moisture at a different rate then inevitably cracking will occur.  Additionally if the cracks are hair line cracks they are usually a consequence of the initial drying out of the render when first applied to the wall.  There are a number of options available, but I must stress that there is no guarantee that any of the solutions will be 100% successful.

  • If the cracking is hairline then a coat or two of paint could fill them adequately.
  • If they are larger than hairline and the surface is smooth you could fill them with a premixed plastering finish coat.  This will need time to set and then require a light sanding with a fine abrasive paper.
  • If it is bagged or has a finish of a sandy nature (finished with a wooden float) you may need to try a mixture of cement and a sand of the same coarseness as on the wall.

Irrespective of the effort to rectify the concerns you need to do a test in an area that is not in an area of common use or an area that is out of sight from normal household activities.

Finally the render or coating may be of a proprietary type and that may require some expert assistance.   If you have any doubts or are really concerned I suggest you contact a reputable rendering company for advice.

I hope that this helps.

Kind regards,
Mike
